Macfrut strengthens ties to the Caribbean. Andrés Mejía O. Baez, President of Abapromango, (Asociación Banileja de productores de mangos), initialled a strategic alliance with the Cesena-based produce show and will bring 12 mango exporters and a trade delegation of 30 people.
Banì, ‘the mango capital’, hosts the fruit’s annual trade show, this year from 5 to 8 June. Once it ends, all efforts will be directed at preparing the trade mission to Cesena with its full complement of export firms.
Today mango acreage in the Dominican Republic stands at about 64,200 hectares and the fruit’s 1,300 commercial groves are mostly located in Baní’s province, for overall 2013 exports valued at US $11.5 million. The man export varieties, Tommy Atkins and Keitt, are mainly sold to markets in the US and Europe, a trade that accounts for more than 3,800 direct jobs.
Mr Angel Ayala, an engineer and member of the Abapromango Association, wrote a few days ago to Macfrut President Domenico Scarpellini thanking him for the invitation and underscored the notable enthusiasm expressed by both producers and exports for the chance expand their business interests that the trade show offers. He also said it will give them the opportunity to meet Italian companies and manufacturers of high-tech packaging lines, equipment and other products to improve mango cultivation.
The shores of the Caribbean yield to the rim of the Mediterranean. This time it’s Algeria that will be the bearer of novelty to Macfrut 2014. The local Chamber of Commerce has confirmed the booking of a group stand at the show that will include the country’s leading produce exporters, a trade that accounts for just under 18% of the produce industry’s total output. The spotlight will be focused mainly on citrus, apricot and date, the star items whose market potential is still far from being fully realised.
Another confirmed booking, this time from continental Europe, comes from Spain’s Anecoop, the trade’s biggest international coop organisation.
